Biotechnology is the use of biology to develop new products, methods, and organisms intended to improve humans and society. The modern practices of biotechnology draw from multiple sciences and technology which include basic sciences like Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Genetics and advanced sciences like Molecular biology , Genomics, Bioinformatics, Nanotechnology, Genetic engineering, Fermentation technology

            Department of Biotechnology made a self-supportive beginning in the year 2005 with the initiation of B.Sc. Biotechnology Optional course, and immediately next year Department started a second professional Course of Biotechnology in the year 2006 as Biotechnology (Entire) . Recently in this year 2023 M.Sc. Biotechnology course is also begun. Vivekanand College is the only college with these all courses together on one campus.

             Biotechnology Optional was Established in June 2005 by Honourable Principal Dr. A.N. Jagtap and Dr. M.Y. Bachulkar. Our department tries to attend excellence and provide job and educational opportunities to the graduates in Biotechnology.

The department has well-equipped a, laboratories with the latest equipment and instrumentation. The department has a total 4 laboratories Viz. Biochemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology and r-DNA, Plant Tissue Culture, all labs with internet facility. The department has a departmental library where reputed national and international editions of books are made available to all PG and UG students of Biotechnology.

The department has highly qualified and experienced teaching staff, who aim hard to impart good quality education to the students to survive in all fields like academic, research, and technical levels. As a result of this, our department has 26 University rankers.

At the BSc III level, students carry out their research projects concerning Fermentation technology, Nanobiotechnology, enzyme technology & and other research areas. Faculty encourages the students to participate in Model presentations, poster presentations, seminars & and other extracurricular activities and Intra and intercollegiate Competition. The college also provides funds under seed money projects for innovative research as well as for research attitudes among us.
