The Department of Zoology was started in 1964 and imparts teaching at the undergraduate level. The department has well-equipped laboratories for undergraduate students to provide hands-on training. The department has a Shivaji University-recognized research laboratory, and faculties are recognized as research guides. The research guides are actively working in various research areas like aquatic biology, cell biology, toxicology, neurobiology, etc. Nine research students are registered in the Department of Zoology and working toward their Ph.D. degrees. The faculties are recipients of various national awards, such as the Ideal Teacher Award, Best Teacher Award, and Mahatma Jotiba Phule Excellence Award, for their contribution to social work. The department helps to train students to respond to global challenges and particularly the needs of society through education in the areas of biology, invertebrate, and vertebrate zoology.
We are aware of the fundamental role of science and biology in the lives of citizens today and tomorrow. We emphasize biological literacy in our education and educational programs. The integrated teaching-learning process is the heart of the department. The department also contributed to society by organizing poultry management training, water treatment plant training, and industrial effluent treatment training. Education in the field is provided through regular field trips specifically for skill enhancement courses in zoology such as beekeeping, sericulture, aquaculture, poultry farming, dairy farming, etc., which provide students with an insight into the various career opportunities in zoology. We also organize the scientific talks of eminent speakers to strengthen their knowledge and inculcate curiosity and research aptitude. Currently, the department reaches new heights in the fields of teaching, research, and the development of infrastructure in modern zoology.
